1. Well, kinda-failed. After two quickly extinguished tries at a republican government, they finally won lasting independence under Simón Bolívar in 1821. Nowadays, they’re a very healthy nation, inspiring such BBC headlines as “Venezuela crisis: ‘People are ready to explode,’ ” and “Venezuela crisis: What is happening?”

2. The consul, Joel R. Poinsett, made a career as a south-of-the-border buttinsky. As minister to Mexico, he once essentially tried to redraw the border without Mexico noticing (they did). They even coined the word poinsettismo for his a-hole interloping. But he brought back a nice Christmas gift for American gardeners: a red, winter-blooming flower that’s still called the poinsettia.

3. It didn’t help when Burnet picked a campaign fight with beloved war hero Sam Houston, whom he labeled “Big Drunk” and an opium addict. In turn, Houston called Burnet a hog thief. Houston won that election for the Texas presidency, and blocked payment of Burnet’s VP paycheck.
